7 August 2021 De Mazenod Family

meeting – Australia

Theme: Being the Most United Family.

An Annual Gathering of the De Mazenod Family in Australia was held on 7 August 2021. The aim of the Gathering is to annually connect the various ministries and members – to connect, inform,unify and engage the wider Oblate community across the common foundation of St Eugene’s charism. This was the third such Gathering that has been held, with the first meeting a physical meeting of different representatives from the various Oblate ministries from across Australia.

Owing to COVID restrictions, this year’s  was an online gathering, of over 120 participants from ministries including Oblate Parishes, Youth Ministry, Oblate schools and Outreach services connected to the Oblates.

The theme for the day was

Being the Most United Family.” The program included a welcome from the Provincial, Fr Christian Fini and a reflection by the Seminary Rector, Fr Andrew Chen, on Being the Most United Family using St Eugene’s charism. There was time for sharing and discussion on the reflection, as well as input from participants on what it takes for the De Mazenod Family to meet St Eugene’s dream of being the Most United Family.

The Vision and Mission Statement for the De Mazenod Family was presented with a feedback form provided to participants to seek aspects of the Statement that most resonated with them.

A summary of projects completed was also presented along with the context in which these fit into the overall scheme. An overview of the new website and the courses available was also presented.

Projects in the last 12 months included:

  • online prayer resources and prayer programs held online during COVID;
  • courses on St Eugene of varying lengths developed and available online on St Eugene;
  • regular newsletter with upcoming events, updates and a reflection on the charism;
  • a new website constructed to provide greater connection, and ease of access to the available resources;
  • upcoming parish mission;
  • involvement in international Lay Association Gathering (see previous article).

The Vison Mission Statement

One of the many discussion groups – Each lead by a goof facilitator.

The questions were related to the Talk given by Fr. Andrew Chen OMI who quoted many texts from the life of the Founder related to the Theme “Being the Most United Family.”

Here are some of the questions:

What thing spoke/stood out to you most in Fr Andrew’s talk?

Think about your extended family for a moment– many of us have experienced levels of brokenness within our own families, just as St Eugene did following the divorce of his parents. What are some of the reasons that you could speculate that St Eugene had the drive he did to create his “Most United Family”?

St Eugene had a strong belief that obedience to the rules of our faith and community can also give communal and individual peace. What challenges does this present to us individually and as a community of faith? What peace and comfort can this bring us? How does this align/contrast with the rules that we abide by within our own family units?

Fr. Louis Lougen OMI (Superior General ) Gives a blessing at end of the 3 hour meeting.

17 July 2021 First Asia Oceania Lay Associations gathering

This went very well. Most units were present. Turkmenistan was absent because they will join the European group. Because it was a virtual meeting it was recommended that all participants should be on their individual devices (Laptop-PC or other) so they could actively take part in the groups and get to know people in the region. Because this was the first gathering it was decided to limit the number to 1 Oblate with 3 lay people per unit.

All units were asked to make a video presentation of about 6 to 10 min max. Giving a brief introduction to Unit (context of mission, country, size, number of Oblates and history) then: –

What is the Unit’s vision for working with lay people?

What are the future projects for ministry with lay people?

The day began with prayer prepared by the Philippines. Australia, Colombo, Japan, Indonesia, Philippines, Thailand presented theirs videos. India presented a ppt presentation and China and Jaffna gave a spoken presentation. The participants totaled 38.

BLOG – FR. FRANK SANTUCCI OMI – SERIES ON ” WHO IS ST. EUGENE?”

We are very thankful to Fr. Frank for letting us republish on our 2nd Oblate Lay Associations Congress’s Web his series, “WHO IS ST. EUGENE?” This is very helpful for people who are just learning about him. So we recommend to all to go and read the Blogs. They are short and just give a brief idea of this man, priest, bishop, founder and SAINT.

On June 7th we start another series by Fr. Frank entitled OUR BICENTENARY

Poland 21-23 May 2021

Gathering in Siedlce
On May 21-23, a preparatory meeting for the lay congress was held in Siedlce in Poland. For the first time, the meeting was held live, the previous meetings were held on-line. It was attended by representatives of the parish and Oblate works. It was a time of getting to know each other, seeing where we are today as a Polish province, what Oblate associations for the laity exist in our country. It was also a time of prayer and a better understanding of the charism of St. Eugene de Mazenod. We are planning the next meeting in September in Iława.
